Addictions and The Types You May Have But Not Know It

There are many reasons why people have addictions. Some might have addictions because they were influenced by their peers while others choose to do it because it helps them feel good about themselves. Some people also develop an addiction because it’s their way of relieving themselves from stress or problems.

But since too much of anything is bad, an addiction can have adverse effects in your life. It can become the reason why you’ll lose your relationships, career, health and even finances. What might seem like a harmless pastime can progress into an addiction and cause your life to take a turn for the worse.

Contrary to popular belief, addiction comes in different types. Addiction doesn’t only happen when you take an excessive amount of drugs and alcohol too often; addiction is more than that. And most often than not, knowing if you’re already addicted to something can be tough to spot. You might be having an addiction without you even noticing it. To drive the point home, consider the list below:

1. Gambling addiction: Aside from alcohol and drug addiction, gambling addiction is one of the most common addiction you can experience. Sure, you can always play games during leisure but if you’re already borrowing money, lying and considering these games as the most important thing in the world, you might already be addicted to gambling. The effects of gambling addiction on your brain are similar to drug and alcohol addictions.

2. Sex addiction: It’s common to hear celebrities who undergo rehab because of sex addiction. But if you doubt if this information is real or not, here’s the answer – sex addiction does exist. It can happen to anyone and once it does, this addiction can interfere with a person’s ability to work, maintain relationships and fulfill their responsibilities. The most common symptoms of sex addiction are compulsive masturbation, multiple affairs with different sexual partners and one-night stands, practicing unsafe sex and an inability to contain sexual urges.

3. Internet addiction: With the advent of technology, more and more people are developing internet addiction. Yes, the internet is useful to a lot of people, but if you consider the internet as the focal point of your life, you might already be developing symptoms of an addiction. When you don’t have any sense of time when you’re using the internet, prioritizes the internet among all of your tasks and you feel euphoria when you’re using it, you might already be an internet addict.

4. Shopping addiction: Splurging or rewarding yourself through shopping can be your motivation to continue achieving your goals. It can also be an avenue to reap the efforts of your hard work. But if you’re shopping too often than this behaviour is slowly spinning out of control, you might already be a shopping addict. Are you overspending whenever you’re shopping and it becomes the reason for more problems in your life? Do you go shopping when you’re sad or angry? Do you buy items which you don’t use or wear? Answering “yes” to all of these questions confirms that you’re addicted to shopping.

5. Video game addiction: When you can’t survive the day without playing a video game, or you can’t keep your hands off a gaming console, it might not be because you’re bored, it might be because you already have video game addiction. Some of the most common symptoms of video game addiction includes having feelings of anger or frustration whenever someone prohibits you from playing a video game, thinking about your next video game session when you’re not online, loss of interest in other activities other than the playing video games and having distorted perception of time when you’re playing.

6. Plastic surgery addiction: Today, you can look like your favorite model or celebrity – all thanks to plastic surgery. These procedures might be expensive but the benefits it can bring to your life will be worth it. A nose lift or liposuction might be the only thing you need to boost your confidence. But just like any other type of addiction, seeking multiple plastic surgeries too often can be a red flag that you already have plastic surgery addiction.
