The Coolest Birkenstock Collaborations to Date
Birkenstock is one of the world’s most tried-and-true shoe brands, with a reputation for high-quality leather sandals that dates to 1774 Germany. Despite this impressive heritage, however, this renowned company is anything but boring. These are the five most exciting, fashion-forward Birkenstock collaborations released in recent memory.
Birkenstock x Proenza Schouler
This spring, the shoe company teamed and schemed with the New York fashion brand to make some of the most sought-after Birkenstock sandals for women of the season. The capsule collaboration features special patent leather versions of the Milano and Arizona sandals with neon yellow contrast topstitching with comfort side panels atop a cork sole.
Proenza Schouler designer Lazaro Hernandez’s drew inspiration from his days as a young adult in Miami, and his partner Jack McCullogh from his years on the road trailing The Grateful Dead. Despite these colorful memories, the capsule itself is minimal and understated, with black leather footbeds and a structured silhouette. Choose from ochre, silver, white or black.
Birkenstock x Concepts
Concepts is an iconic New York City clothing store, one of the first designers to blend skate style and streetwear in a concept that echoes throughout today’s 90s revival. In Fall 2019, the shop released its own signature Birkenstocks, updating the closed-toed Boston shoe style in bold black and cherry-red suede. This popular collab is known for its luxe fabrics and intricate details like the gold-stamped Concepts logo, in harmony with the shop’s reputation for taking shoe-closet staples to the next level.
Birkenstock x Rick Owens
This California designer is currently on his second collaboration with Birkenstock. The Rick Owens entry in the brand’s 1774 line is an androgynous take on the unisex sandal, with unexpected pairings like an athleisure-inspired hook-and-loop closure on a sleek oiled nubuck sandal. The collection also spotlights pops of futuristic hues atop the earthy palette that signifies the Birkenstock brand. Choose from the Hancock Rotterhiker Boot, the Rotterdam dual-strap sandal or the classic Arizona silhouette.
Birkenstock x Valentino
Valentino Garavani has been the foremost name in Italian fashion for decades–so much so that like Madonna, he needs no last name. Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli is the driving force behind this collaboration, which comprises two different takes on the two-strap Arizona. One style features sleek black leather, including a tonal footbed and matching buckles, while the other is a stunning monochromatic lipstick red. The black version is also emblazoned with the designer’s instantly recognizable VLTN logo in bold white letters.
Birkenstock x Random Identities
Random Identities is the brainchild of Italian designer Stefano Pilati, formerly the head designer at Yves Saint Laurent for nearly a decade. He set off on his own in 2017, creating affordable yet timeless streetwear style staples. With his Birkenstock collab, Pilati released three imminently wearable takes on the Arizona sandal: one in olive-green leopard-print fur, one in elegant monochrome black leather and one in rich, unique black-and-silver brocade. Each takes the update a step further with a re-engineered elasticized strap in place of the standard Birkenstock buckle closure.
